Anth 586 Augering

Students have begun sampling existing sediments at two areas of the site with bucket augers.  The goal of augering is to collect and describe samples from each of the buried stratigraphic units recognized, and to eventually use these for comparison with those derived from the excavation of the blocks.

Each bucket of sediment removed with the augers is laid on a tarp in the order it is removed.  Field observations on color, texture, boundaries, and inclusions are made, and a sediment sample from each stratigraphic unit is collected.  Over the next week, students will perform more detailed descriptions of these samples in the lab, as well as draft a profile of the stratigraphic sequences revealed through their augering.
