Artifact of the Week 4/4/2011

LA3324.6183: Edward Plateau Chert

A cache of 5 Clovis artifacts were discovered in 1990 by Joanne Dickenson, curator of the site at that time.  The cache consisted of 4 prismatic blades and the large flat flake shown above.  All were made from Edwards Plateau Chert.  The cache was located along an arroyo or small stream that flowed into the pond from the west during Clovis times (a.k.a. the Mitchell Locality).  An earlier blade cache found at Blackwater Draw was excavated by F. Earl Green in 1963 from the North Bank area.  The Green blade cache is currently on loan to Dr. Eileen Johnson at Texas Tech University.
